The Statue of Unity is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who is well-known as Iron Man of India. This 182-metre tall Statue was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018 in Narmada District, Gujarat. It reached a quick popularity among the tourists and visited by around 30,000 of locals and tourist every day. This world’s tallest statue is twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty.
Attractions Near Statue of Unity
A lift is installed in the statue which runs at 4 meters speed/second to reach the viewer’s gallery. It is close to the chest area of the statue which is at 135 height from the base. A visitor can take the lift and enjoy the places there.
The Iron man’s statue encompasses a Tent City and a 17-km-long Valley of Flowers. , ‘Sreshtha Bharat Bhavan‘, a guest house is also available for the staying convenience of the tourists.
Inside the mammoth structure an exhibition and museum have been built. They depict the life and times of Sardar Ji.
The project was initiated from the hands of farmers. The state requested the farmers to donate their used and idle farming equipment in order to collect the iron required for the Sardar Patel’s statue. Over 5000 tons of iron was collected and used for the structural construction instead of Iron Man’s Statue.
Why is the Statue of Unity built?
Sardar Ji was totally committed to unify the princely states to form a combined Indian Republic and he made his tireless relief efforts for the refugees leaving Punjab and Delhi, incorporating the British Colonial Provinces that were allocated to India. Such important activities earned him the title “Unifier of India”. It was in his reminiscence and as a mark of his contribution to a nation filled out with diversities. That’s how the Statue of Unity born.
The Statue of Unity is open to the public from 2nd November and it is kept open on all days of the week from 9 am to 8 pm except Monday. Though the iconic monument is open till 8 PM, you can visit the Observation view till 6 PM.
Every Monday the maintenance work is scheduled. So, visitors have to plan their trip accordingly. Light and Laser Show Work is under progress till 12th Dec 2018.
The Statue is maintained by “Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd” that has made the ticket booking faster and easier. One can book the tickets on the spot or through online.
Statue of Unity Ticket Price
‘Observation Deck view’:
In this ticket, you can enjoy seeing the Observation Dec View, Memorial, Audio Visual Gallery, SOU Site, Museum, Valley of Flower and Sardar Sarovar Dam. Rs.200 and Rs.350 are charged for the children between 3-15 years and adults.
Statue of Unity Entry Ticket
It is Entry Ticket, another ticket option. A Museum, Sardar Sarovar Dam, Valley of Flower, Audio Visual Gallery, SOU site, and Memorial, Museum is the places that can be seen in the entry ticket. Rs. 60 and 120 are charged for children between 3-15 years and adults.
Statue of Unity Bus Ticket
The Bus Ticket costs Rs.30. If you already booked observation Deck or Entry Ticket then there is no need to pay for the bus separately.
How can you reach the Statue of Unity?
It is exactly located at Sardar Sarovar Dam, Kevadiya Village Narmada, Gujarat. As the place turned as the best tourist spot in Gujarat, the tourists started to rush there. The visitors have to travel about 3.5 km to reach “Sadhu Bet” Island from the dam where the statue is located.
From the State capital Ahmedabad 200 km is the distance to reach the State of Unity and from Mumbai 420 km.
It will take around 200 km to reach the site from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which may be the nearest International Airport. And The Vadodara Airport is the nearest one to the statue of unity.
Vadodara Railway station is the nearest railway station to the Sardar Patel statue, about 92 km distance.
If you opt for a road trip from Mumbai it will take around 429 km via NH48 and State Highway 63. State Highway 11 and State Highway 63 are other options to reach the place.
Fast Fact about India’s Monument:
- Rs.2, 989 crores was spent to build the Iron Man’s statue. It is funded by the State and the Central Government through the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust partly.
- The idea behind the statue was to generate over 15,000 direct jobs for the local tribal every year besides honouring the Prestigious Man.
- Larsen & Toubro is the project constructor who has about 25 years of the contract for daily operation and maintenance of the statue
- 5700 metric ton of structural steel and reinforcement bars of 18500 metric ton was used in the production of Statue of Unity.
- Next to the statue, for tourists’ convenience, a 3-star hotel with 128 rooms along with food service, conference and guest facilities are available.
